A non-contact ankle injury ends a World Cup for a striker at the peak of the sport

In the 98th minute of Mexico’s World Cup Round-of-16 loss to England at the Estadio Azteca, substitute striker Santiago Giménez went down with what has been diagnosed as a Grade II ankle sprain, expected to sideline him for roughly eight weeks. The injury came with no contact from a defender — his right ankle rolled awkwardly as he chased a ball in stoppage time. It was also a recurrence on the same ankle he had surgery on the previous year. → Read more.

LigaSys take: Two details here are salient. First, there was no tackle or collision involved, just a foot landing wrong at speed, which is how many serious ankle injuries actually happen. Second, this was a reinjury of a previously compromised ankle, on one of the biggest stages in sport, to an athlete with access to the best medical and performance resources in the world. Neither preparation nor elite care changes the underlying physics of how fast these injuries occur.


Wimbledon’s grass is slippery again, and this year it decided a match

The English tournament’s opening days produced a familiar slipping story, with unusually clear consequences. Eventual champion Jannik Sinner finished his first-round win with blood on his shoe. Ben Shelton nearly did the splits. Maja Chwalińska wasn’t as fortunate: the No. 20 seed and Roland Garros finalist was one point from victory at 6-2, 5-2 when she slipped behind the baseline chasing a forehand, injured her right ankle, and took a medical timeout to have it strapped. Her movement never recovered and she lost in three sets. "I fell, and I felt my ankle," she said. "I wanted to continue, but I didn't feel comfortable moving." Novak Djokovic, who slipped repeatedly in his own opener, pointed to both the closed Centre Court roof and pre-tournament heat, noting that when it's hot, the grass and the soil beneath it soften. LigaSys take: What’s striking is that everyone involved agrees the surface behaves this way and treats it as settled. Grass softens in heat, holds moisture under a closed roof, and gets slick. The question worth asking isn’t whether the surface is slippery. It’s what a foot that loses traction at speed does to the joint above it, and how much of the lower-limb injury picture across sport is defined by what athletes are standing on. Serena Williams’ return ends with knee injury in first round

ESPN, July 2026

Serena Williams tweaked her right knee at the end of the first set of her first singles match in nearly four years, a three-set loss to Maya Joint on Centre Court. There was no visible incident during the match and she requested no medical treatment; the injury surfaced afterward through her agent. Days later she withdrew from the doubles draw with sister Venus. → Read more

LigaSys take: Once again, we see no collision, no sudden pivot, no obvious mechanism in the broadcast. That’s a recurring feature of joint injuries: the event is so fast it is nearly invisible in real time. It’s worth noting she was also forced into hiatus from Wimbledon in 2021 after slipping on this surface.


The bench paradox: why substitutes get injured more often than starters

Barça Innovation Hub, June 2025

A research summary published by the Barça Innovation Hub found that players who are not starters suffer twice as many non-contact injuries and three times as many muscle injuries in matches compared to starters, despite carrying similar training load. Somewhat counterintuitively, training time calibrated at a lower than competition-level intensity appears to reduce an athlete’s tolerance to the specific demands of match play, so rotations and rest intended to prevent injuries can, if poorly applied, do the opposite. → Read more

LigaSys take: A useful reminder that injury risk isn’t only about how hard athletes work. It can also involve a mismatch between what the body has been conditioned for and what it’s suddenly asked to do. Giménez, coming off the bench cold for Mexico in the 98th minute, is almost a textbook case. Proper load planning can help offset some of that mismatch, but some risk always remains.


A systematic review asks what ankle rehab actually accomplishes

Journal of Clinical Medicine, December 2025

A systematic review by Marlena Skwiot examined which physiotherapy interventions meaningfully improve outcomes for athletes with chronic ankle instability (CAI), noting that recurrence reaches as high as 80% in high-risk sports. Balance and proprioceptive training show consistent benefit. But the review also found that the evidence base for many widely used protocols is thinner than practitioners might assume. → Read the review

LigaSys take: Recurrence of ankle instability at 80% — clearly the first injury is frequently the start of something rather than the end of it. That puts a lot of weight on the moment of first injury.
